An Honor by Norman Regional Health Foundation

Friday, April 17, 2009

The family of one of our patients has asked me to relay their appreciation for the exceptional care and kindness rendered to their loved one who passed away very early this morning. Daughter Toni Carter gave permission to share their story including their names, if we wish. Over the past twenty years Norman Regional has cared for Betty and Jim Chase on several occasions, always providing wonderful medical care with utmost compassion. Betty passed away some time ago, in her home. This morning about 1:30, Jim passed away in PCU. Jim was 88 years old, had a full life, and was blessed by the ability to live independently until very near the end. Last night he visited with Toni and other family members. He asked to have his beloved dog visit him, since he had been with us for two weeks, and he missed her. During the night, Jim's heart stopped and he quit breathing. By his own request he was not resuscitated. Today, Jim's daughter, Toni, who works for a different hospital in the metro area, called me to tell me that she was certain nothing would please her dad more than to direct contributions in his memory to our hospital, as a way of expressing appreciation and of providing continued exceptional care for other patients in the future. What an honor for our Foundation to accept those gifts on behalf of the excellent work done by our clinical staff, so exceptional that even when the outcome is sad, the patient's family feels good about their experience with our health system. On behalf of the Chase Family, thank you, All.

Smoke Free! by Rajeanna Squyres

Wednesday, March 4, 2009

I would like to thank Jerry Deming, RN, for her support and guidance when I decided to quit smoking. The smoking cessation classes offered by NRHS and taught by Jerry helped me quit. I’d been a smoker for about 30 years, but had my last cigarette Sept. 16, 2008 – the first day of class. I’d like others struggling to quit to know what a great job Jerry is doing. This program is helping a lot of people.

NRHS offers tobacco cessation classes free to employees and patients. For more information or to register for a class, call (405) 440-8802.

Outstanding Care by T. Nelson

My daughter was hospitalized in Moore for 3 days for asthma. We initially went to ER and after a couple of hours of trying to get her heart rate up they decided to admit her. I want to thank the entire staff for the quality care and professional displayed while we were there. We were met with hospital service by staff on EVERY level; Volunteers, Dietary, Technicians, RNs, housekeeping, Respiratory Theraptists, Physician, etc. This is her second time being hospitaled (was there in 2007) and I was impressed at the number of familiar faces. Thanks again to a tremendous staff who took excellent care of her (and me since I had to stay with her due to her age).

Thank You! by Bonnie Dunn

On January 2, 2009 I woke up with some stomach issues - I wasn't feeling really bad and certainly had no idea that by 7pm that evening the ambulance would have to take me to NRHS's ER. At 52 years old I've been very fortunate to be in good health and I've never had to ride as a patient in an ambulance and end up in the Emergency Room. Honestly I had heard horror stories from some people so in addition to feeling like I was going to die - I was somewhat concerned about the care I was about to receive. I have to say that from start to finish, the treatment and care that I received from all of the staff was wonderful! Everyone was very kind and understanding, professional without being arrogant. I would especially like to thank the nurse and the doctor who provided very wonderful care to me during my few hour stay in the ER. I also appreciated the respect that my life partner received when she wanted to be by my side during my time in ER. I have always worked closely with NRHS as a professional social services provider in the community, but now having experienced the hospital - ER as a patient, my respect for the hospital and staff has risen to a whole new level. When you are feeling terrified and uncertain of what is happening to what has always been a very healthy body, NRHS has proven to be a place that I can go for care for my physical well being, while being met with sensitivity to the fear that I was having. Thank you to everyone at NRHS, we are fortunate to live in a community with a wonderful Hospital and great ER! Thank You! Bonnie L. Dunn, MHR Executive Director Transition House, Inc.

I wanted to respond to J. Webster's posting and thank him for his appreciation. I cared for his mother and I'm happy to have been a part of his and her journey :)
