Program Offers Cancer Patients a Way to Look Good, Feel Better

NORMAN - Cancer can rob a woman of her energy, appetite and strength. The loss of hair, changes to the skin and other appearance-related side effects of cancer can be crushing for many women going through treatment. But it does not have to take away her self-confidence.

Norman Regional Health System is teaming up with the American Cancer Society, the National Cosmetology Association and the Personal Care Products Council Foundation to offer female cancer patients in Cleveland County a world-wide program and support group called Look Good… Feel Better.

“A diagnosis of cancer changes your life. The treatment phase of your cancer journey can be a struggle,” said Cecyle Haley, program coordinator of Norman Regional’s Cancer Management Center. “The Look Good… Feel Better program provides women with free information and tools needed to continue to look their best which helps them feel better and more in control during a difficult part of their life.”

The free Look Good… Feel Better program enlists the help of licensed cosmetologists from the Moore/Norman area to teach female cancer patients in active treatment how to cope with the changes in their appearance. These cosmetologists donate their time and skills to help women with everything from filling in an eyebrow lines to finding a wig or other hair accessories that works best, all done in a comfortable and supportive atmosphere.

Sarah Bloom with the American Cancer Society says free cosmetic kits worth $250, and loaded with name brand make-up for every skin tone, will be provided to each woman during the group sessions.

“Not only do ladies walk away with a kit full of fabulous and free make-up, we hope the session provides them an opportunity to feel supported by others who are experiencing similar journeys and to always remember to take care of them selves first,” said Bloom.

Norman Regional’s second Look Good… Feel Better session will be held on September 14 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the hospital’s Education Center. To register or for more information, please call Cecyle Haley at 307-1705.

In the United States alone, more than 650,000 women have participated in the Look Good… Feel Better program. Haley says Norman Regional hopes many women in the area will benefit from the program being offered locally.

“When women leave our sessions, we hope they’ve enjoyed themselves and they’re back on top of the world, ready to use the information and the great make-up kit and tips from the cosmetologist to help them look good and feel their best!”

Here are some comments from ladies who participated in July’s Look Good… Feel Better program:

  • “Thank you to everyone for the boost to my heart and soul. May God bless each of you.”
  • “A wonderful opportunity, I could see the positive effect immediately for those attending.”
