Norman Regional Health System’s Total Knee and Total Hip Joint Replacement Program was recently certified in Disease Specific Care by the Joint Commission making it the first and only in the state of Oklahoma to hold this certification.
This certification designates that Norman Regional works continuously to provide safe, high-quality care, treatment and services.
“I’m proud that our Health System and staff are the first in Oklahoma to be recognized with this certification,” said David Whitaker, president and CEO of Norman Regional Health System. “It speaks volumes to the quality of care provided to patients in our community.”
Pursuing this certification was important to both leadership and staff.
“Norman Regional voluntarily pursued this comprehensive, independent evaluation of our Total Hip and Total Knee programs to demonstrate our commitment to the safety and quality of care we provide our patients,” said Marge Liesenfeld, director of Rehabilitation Services. “We’re very proud to have achieved this distinction.”
Surveyors from the Joint Commission, an independent organization that accredits and certifies health care providers, arrived at Norman Regional in February. After surveying the program and facility, they found no requirements for improvement, a rare occurrence on an initial survey, Whitaker said.
“The surveyors were extremely impressed with their findings,” Whitaker said. “Our staff especially those in our orthopedics and spine unit are committed to excellence in patient care and this certification is just one outcome of their dedication to their patients.”
Programs that are certified need to address three main areas:
Disease-specific programs that successfully demonstrate compliance in all three areas are awarded certification for a two-year period.
