Robotic Surgery Offers Benefits for Patients

One tool is helping patients undergoing surgery get back to living their lives sooner. The new da Vinci Surgical System offers another option to patients and physicians in the operating room.

Norman Regional’s hospital The HealthPlex, located off Interstate 35 on Tecumseh Road, is now home to the da Vinci Surgical System. This is a robotic tool that enables doctors to perform complex surgery using a minimally invasive approach.

Surgical robotics is a technology designed to give surgeons more precision, 3-D high definition vision and greater control and comfort during complex procedures. It is an innovative alternative to open surgery and highly useful tool for laparoscopic surgery.

Potential benefits for patients include:

  • smaller incisions
  • less pain
  • shorter hospital stay
  • faster recovery time

Surgeons at the HealthPlex are now using the da Vinci System for gynecologic procedures. The first surgery at the HealthPlex using the da Vinci robot was performed on Wed. July 28, 2010.

Daryle Voss, Norman Regional Health System vice president and chief administrative officer of the HealthPlex, said he sees many advantages for both patients and physicians with this new technology.

“The Health System strives to equip our physicians with an array of tools to treat the varying health needs of their patients,” Voss said. “Keeping current with technology is important and when that technology also provides several benefits to patients, it’s a home run for everyone involved.”

The da Vinci Surgical System is a sophisticated robotic platform designed to enable complex surgery using a minimally invasive approach. The system consists of an ergonomic surgeon’s console, a patient-side cart with four interactive robotic arms, a high-performance 3D HD vision system and EndoWrist® instruments.

The da Vinci System is designed to scale, filter and seamlessly translate the surgeon's hand movements into more precise movements of the EndoWrist instruments. The da Vinci System’s high-resolution 3D stereo viewer is designed to provide surgeons with an immersive experience. Unlike conventional approaches, the targeted anatomy appears at high magnification, in brilliant color and with natural depth of field.

To perform a procedure, the surgeon uses the console’s master controls to maneuver the patient-side cart’s four robotic arms, which securely hold the EndoWrist instruments and high-resolution endoscopic camera.

A final hallmark of the da Vinci System is its fail-safe design, incorporating multiple safety features designed to minimize opportunities for human error.

Ask your doctor if da Vinci surgery is an appropriate treatment option for you.
