Healthy Equals SNAP
SNAP (Sports, Nutrition, Active Play) Camp will be held August 4th through the 7th for children ages six through 12 who have participated in “Fit Families,” a family-based health program sponsored by Norman Regional.
Camp participants will visit a different country each day while wearing pedometers and tracking their steps. They will also participate in exercise activities, swim at the YMCA and shop at the Farmers Market for nutritious snacks that will fit the culture of their adopted country.
This is the second year for SNAP Camp. Many of the camp activities will revolve around SPARK and “The Organ Wise Guys” curriculum. These programs are recognized and used by schools and communities around the country.
At SNAP Camp, the children are encouraged to stay active and have fun at the same time. Last year, one participant said he enjoyed it so much he would rather go to SNAP Camp than school! The lessons learned at SNAP Camp can be incorporated into anyone’s daily lives to initiate healthy lifestyle changes in themselves and their entire family.
Children are invited to Fit Families and SNAP Camp through Norman Regional Health System’s partnership with local schools. More than 10,000 students are screened annually through the Healthy Youth program. If the screening results indicate a child is overweight or at risk of being overweight, the child and his or her family are invited to join the Fit Families program and participate in the summer refresher, SNAP camp.
