Got water? The importance of H2O

Q: I’m always hearing about the importance of water. Why is water so important and how much should I drink?

A: Yes, water is important. Water plays an important roll in all body functions and is essential for health and even survival. The general guideline is to drink eight cups of water per day which is equivalent to 64 ounces or half a gallon.

However, the amount of water needed can be affected by climate, diet and physical activity. Water can also help with weight loss. Increasing your water intake when on a diet will help you feel full and help you stay away from eating excess calories. Water also helps to flush away waste in the body which can be important during times of weight loss.

Here are some tips to ensure you are getting enough water:

  • Sip water throughout the day, even when you are not thirsty.
  • Always have water on hand. Carry a water bottle in your purse or bag.
  • If you don’t like plain water, try adding low or non-calorie flavorings to water, such as a wedge of fruit or a sugar-free flavoring packet.
  • Get your water through food. Fruits and vegetables have a high water content that can help you reach your daily goal.

Water is essential for a healthy body and can help you with your diet goals, so drink plenty of water every day!
