Intensivists Provide Round the Clock Critical Care

Norman Regional Health System has specialized physicians caring for our most critical patients, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Called Intensivists, these doctors are board-certified pulmonologists that dedicate their time to our patients in the Intensive Care Unit or ICU. Norman Regional’s Intensivists are also board certified in critical care medicine. There is at least one Intensivist covering the health system’s three hospitals around the clock, 365 days of the year and Norman Regional is the only non-teaching hospital in the metro that provides that around-the-clock Intensivist care.

"Having Intensivists on staff allows for the standardization of care in our health system," said Dr. Aaron Boyd, an Intensivist at Norman Regional. "Intensivists provide continuous state-of-the-art, best practice care for our critically ill patients."

Intensivists treat patients that need critical care for stroke, heart attacks, post-surgical care and more. The national trend to have specialized physicians within a hospital setting began about ten years ago. The benefits of this program are:

  • Better coordination of patient care
  • Better patient health outcomes
  • 24/7 availability in the hospital setting that facilitates timely care of the patients in the hospital and those being admitted through the emergency department

"Having Intensivists on staff provides for round-the-clock coordination of patient care. It gives the health system the ability to provide interdisciplinary care by a single team. The result is a better outcome for our patients being treated in a critical care situation," said David Whitaker, President and CEO of Norman Regional Health System.

Patients in the ICU are often our sickest patients who require the most complicated treatment. Norman Regional’s Intensivists are in the hospital and always available to immediately assess a patient. Our Intensivists also coordinate each day with nurses, dieticians, case managers, respiratory therapists and other clinical professors to ensure a patient’s complete wellbeing and fine tune the care they receive.

For Norman Regional’s Intensivists and clinical team, the patient is the heart of their mission.
