A Record Setting Month for Norman Regional Family Birth Center

This past month was a busy one for the Norman Regional Hospital’s Family Birth Center. In July alone, 207 babies were delivered at Norman Regional Hospital. There were 31 babies in the nursery at one time. The only other month even coming close was May 2004 with 201 babies delivered.

Annette Carter, Manager of the Family Birth Center, said, “Childbirth is one of the most memorable experiences a person will ever have whether you are a new parent or grandparent. As a nurse, sharing this experience is extremely rewarding and we are so excited we were able to touch so many people’s lives in July.”

The Norman Regional Hospital’s Family Birth Center prides itself in excellent maternity care. Anesthesia, birthing options, breast feeding, family involvement in the birthing process, and the amount of time the baby spends in the mother’s room and in the nursery is all up to the mom.

“I call it the happiest place here at Norman Regional Hospital. When you see those stunning, curious, and smiling faces through our nursery window and the flashes of the light from the cameras blind you, you know you work in a very popular area,” Paul Brune, Manager of Newborn Nursery, stated.

The maternity suites are designed with a mom’s comfort in mind. Each suite features hardwood floors, cherry wood furnishings, cable TV and VCR and plenty of natural light. Fathers-to-be can stay overnight in the room with mom and baby. A large family waiting room with a play area is close by. Staffed by highly trained nurses, the nursery provides constant monitoring of newborns. A state-of-the-art Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is also on site for babies who need extra care.

Norman Regional Health System is expanding to better meet the healthcare needs of our regional communities. Ongoing hospital construction continues at I-35 and Tecumseh. This multi-million dollar facility will feature a three-story Women’s and Children’s Hospital, including 19 Neonatal Intensive Care beds. This facility is slated to open spring, 2009.
