Summer Hydration Tips

by Jennifer Southard MS, RD/LD
In the hot summer months, most people are likely to take on outside activities more often. Whether you are exercising, completing lawn work, or just enjoying outside activities with your family, it is very important to remember to stay hydrated before and after sweating.

The following are hydration tips to keep in mind:

  •  Avoid exercising at the hottest times of the day.
  • Drink fluids when you are thirsty and throughout the day (not just when you are outside).
  • Water is the best option for activities of less than one hour, but if exercising or sweating for more than an hour… choose a sports drink to help replace electrolytes lost.
  • Look for urine color that is light yellow like lemonade and not dark like apple juice.
  • Listen to your body and take breaks when needed, especially if you start to notice a headache or start to feel lightheaded or weak.

For nutritional counseling, Norman Regional Health System offers the guidance of registered dietitians. Those interested can schedule an appointment for an assessment with a referral from their family physician.
