Over 780 luminaria were sold by Norman Regional Teen Hero Volunteers on hand to assist with the Cleveland County Relay for Life.
Cleveland Relay for Life had over 150 survivors and their caregivers on hand to support the American Cancer Society and the 50 teams participating in the event. “The fund raising goal was set at $101,000 this year but we’ve actually raised over $120,000,” reported Brian Dupler, event chair of the Cleveland County Relay for Life. Landis Byerly, Team Development Chair, was excited and mentioned that she was happy to see more teens participating this year.
Norman Regional Teen Hero volunteers spent time decorating the luminaria bags with the names of cancer survivors and those lost to cancer. The luminaria were then placed around the track, in the bleachers – spelling the word HOPE when lit.
Teen Heroes Mandi Pickett and Jase Beasley performed the luminaria ceremony, by reading hundreds of names being honored or remembered. Both teens were honored and humbled to be part of the ceremony designed to remember those that are no longer with us – and those that are survivors. Teen Mandi Pickett has participated the last four years and has served as a team leader the last 2 years. This was Jase’s first year. “It was an amazing experience and one that I will remember for the rest of my life,” said Jase Beasley.
All nine of the Norman Regional Teen Heroes were made comfortable in a tent and each took their turns walking throughout the night. It was very cold the evening of the Relay but each persevered and made it all night long. The Norman Regional Teens also raised $855 for the American Cancer Society and presented their check the same evening.
This is the 22nd year for the American Cancer Society National Relay for Life. The Norman Regional Teen Hero Volunteer program is a service opportunity at Norman Regional Health System for youth ages 14-18. Participants are selected through an application process.
