AARP Smart Drivers Course – Not Just for Seniors

Norman - Norman Regional Health System has been hosting quarterly AARP safe driving refresher courses for more than 15 years. The AARP driving program that started back in 1979 has a goal of helping older American retain their independence and improve their quality of life. In order to keep participants aware of increased risks, the course has evolved over time. New challenges include the congestion of roads as well as the advancement of technology. Drivers are impacted by distractions that come with the gadgets designed in newer car, access to hand held devices and even new directional lights.

Depending on their auto insurance policy, participants may be eligible for a three year discount. Discounts can vary based upon the insurance company, the specific policy as well as driving records. A completion certificate is provided at the end of each class. Please contact your insurance agent to find out how this will apply to your specific policy.

The course is taught by an AARP trained volunteer. Each year at Norman Regional, about 100 participants take advantage of this class. The program was originally designed for seniors, however, anyone who gets behind the wheel can benefit. According to John Palinsky, the instructor at Norman Regional, he has had participants of all ages. While the majority is seniors, he has had many younger participants. Parents will sign up their young drivers in order to help them become more aware about the risks of the road. His youngest participant had just received her driver’s permit.

Norman Regional will host the next AARP Smart Driver’s Course on Tuesday, May 16th from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The class will be located in the Education Center of Norman Regional Hospital at 901 North Porter, Norman. The cost of the course is $15 for members of AARP and $20 for non-members. Please RSVP to 405-307-3177.
