Mayor encourages families to put their Heart & Sole into fitness for Fall

Mayor Rosenthal is encouraging families to get fit together by joining her in the Heart & Sole community walking campaign. The Mayor will be participating in the upcoming Heart and Sole campaign, a six week walking program aimed at increasing participants’ physical activity. A children’s participation component has been added to the program to encourage families to have fun together while incorporating physical fitness into their daily lives.

“I invite grandparents, parents and their children to join the Mayor’s Mile Markers and help our community reach the goal of 390 million steps toward better health and fitness over the next six weeks,” said Mayor Rosenthal. “I was inspired by the energy and the enthusiasm of International Walk to School Day to work with the Heart & Sole campaign to start this family initiative. This is a great way for parents and their children to take steps together.”

The community-wide program, sponsored as a joint project of the Healthy Community Coalition and Norman Regional Health System, will run October 26th – December 7th. Registration is available online at http://www.myhealthycommunity.com through October 24th and onsite at the free Heart & Sole Community Kick Off and 5 K Fun Walk, October 18th 8 am – 10:30 am at the Cleveland County YMCA.

Heart & Sole participants will receive a pedometer to track steps, walking logs and walking health information as well as a chance to win over 900 prizes. Weekly random prize drawings will also be held. Registration is $10.00 per adult participant. Participants are encouraged to increase their steps each day and to strive to increase their activity with every week of the program. Parents signing up for Heart & Sole, upon request, will receive a free pedometer and walking log for their children. Participant parents will record their steps online while helping their children to record their steps on their paper logs. Families who are not otherwise participating on another walking team are invited to join the Mayor’s Mile Markers. At the end of the program the completed children’s walking logs can be redeemed for prizes.

In addition the campaign has a total participant step goal of 390 million steps - enough steps to circle the earth over 7 times! A running “Step Goal” will be posted on http://www.myhealthycommunity.com during the campaign continually adding the participants’ steps as they are entered to show the step goal progress.

Mayor Rosenthal will lead the kick off 5K fun walk this Saturday. The family-friendly event will feature onsite Heart & Sole registration, blood pressure screenings, informational booths, free 5K walk registration, children’s obstacle course, and much more! Registration and booths open at 8:00 am and the walk will begin at 9:00 am. All Heart & Sole participants taking part in the 5K walk will be allowed to count those steps towards their first week of the campaign. The community kick off is free and open to the public.
