Norman Regional Health System's Stroke Care Program Awarded Certification from the Joint Commission
Norman Regional Health System has earned the Gold Seal of Approval™ from The Joint Commission for Primary Stroke Centers. The Gold Seal of Approval is a clear sign that Norman Regional is compliant with the most stringent standards of performance.
Stroke is the nation's third leading cause of death. Each year about 700,000 people experience a new or recurrent stroke. On average, someone suffers a stroke every 45 seconds. Someone dies of a stroke every three minutes. With urgent and immediate care from providers like Norman Regional, people can survive and go on to live happy, healthy lives. "Time equals brain loss," said Dr. James E. Duncan, M.D., medical director of Norman Regional's Stroke Program. "Time matters and at Norman Regional the moment a patient comes through our Emergency Rooms doors our multidisciplinary team is ready. From our ER physicians and lab technicians to the nurses and neurologists, a patient suffering what could be a life changing event is getting the best care available."
"Norman Regional Health System demonstrated that its stroke care program follows national standards and evidence based practice guidelines that can significantly improve outcomes for stroke patients," said Jean E. Range, M.S., R.N., C.P.H.Q., executive director, Disease-Specific Care Certification, Joint Commission.
The Joint Commission's Primary Stroke Center Certification is based on the recommendations for primary stroke centers published by the Brain Attack Coalition and the American Stroke Association's statements/guidelines for stroke care.
"We're proud to achieve the distinction," said David Whitaker, NRHS President and CEO. "Joint Commission Primary Stroke Center Certification recognizes the ongoing commitment made by Norman Regional Health System to provide outstanding care to our patients and our community."
The Joint Commission seeks to continuously improve the safety and quality of care provided to the public through the provision of health care accreditation and related services that support performance improvement in health care organizations. Norman Regional Health System's Bariatric Program and Outpatient Diabetes Center have also been given the Joint Commission's Gold Seal of Approval.
