Wear Red Day

Norman Regional Hospital

Moore Medical Center

Roses are Red, Violets are blue, We’ll be wearing red this Friday, Won’t you too?

Friday, February 6th is national Wear Red Day. Americans nationwide and right here in Norman will be wearing red to show support for the number one killer of women, heart disease. One in four American women dies of heart disease. One in 30 dies of breast cancer.

On Friday, women and men across the country will wear red to unite in the national movement to give women a personal and urgent wake-up call about their risk of heart disease. Everyone can participate by showing off a favorite red dress, shirt, or tie, or by wearing the Red Dress Pin.

According to David Whitaker, Norman Regional Health System President and CEO, “National Wear Red Day is a great opportunity to reach out to women in our community and alert them to their personal risk factors for heart disease. By wearing red on Friday, we can all show our support for women and heart disease awareness."

By participating in National Wear Red Day, NRHS is joining The Heart Truth, a national awareness campaign to alert women about their risk for heart disease and motivate them to take steps to lower their risk.

What can be done to lower our risk of heart disease? Norman Regional Health System cardiologist Dr. Paul Ayers says know the risk factors:

  • High blood pressure
  • High blood cholesterol
  • Diabetes
  • Smoking
  • Overweight/obesity
  • Physical inactivity
  • Family history of early coronary heart disease
  • Age (for women, 55 and older)

“Talk to your doctor to find out if you are at risk. And take action,” says Dr. Ayers. “Not smoking, healthy eating, being physically active, maintaining a healthy weight, and taking prescribed medication can help to control and reduce the risks of heart disease.”

From the Emergency Department to a diagnosis and possibly an interventional procedure or surgery, Norman Regional’s Heart Center provides a complete continuum of care. The team, consisting of cardiovascular surgeons, cardiologists, rehabilitation specialists and support groups, helps make sure you get back on your feet as soon as possible.
