When Kimberley Donaldson delivered her first child at Moore Medical Center, she felt her delivery nurse was like an angel at her side.
“She was working her hardest to do what was best for me,” Donaldson said. “She kept me calm and did a great job.”
Donaldson chose to honor her nurse, Kim Anable, RN, through the Guardian Angel program. The program gives patients and their families an opportunity to make a meaningful gift to Norman Regional Health Foundation and recognize a caregiver who delivered extraordinary care at Norman Regional Health System.
“Thanking someone is not the first thing on your mind when you’re at a hospital, and this program is a good way to go back and appreciate the job the staff did,” Donaldson said.
Each Guardian Angel is honored among their peers and receives a specially designed lapel-pin to signify their “angel wings.” A cross-section of employees has been given Guardian Angel pins, from doctors and nurses to chaplains and other caregivers.
“We know that every physician, nurse and Health System employee can make a difference in people’s lives each and every day,” said Marilyn M. Geiger, CPA, executive director of NRH Foundation. “We define the term “caregiver” in a broad sense. It can be your physician whom you trust, that special nurse who brings compassion to his or her job, or it may be the employee who delivers your evening meal with a cheerful smile.”
Since the Guardian Angel program began in January, 2009, more than 20 guardian angels have been recognized. To nominate an angel, a donor simply makes a tax-deductible donation of any amount to Norman Regional Health Foundation.
The Foundation is a not-for-profit, charitable organization that supports the vision of the Health System. The Foundation’s programs include free flu vaccines for the communities of Moore and Norman, scholarships for area students who wish to pursue a career in healthcare and funding hospital programs and equipment.
“I want to encourage people to participate, even if it’s a small donation,” Donaldson said. “Everyone enjoys knowing they did a good job.”
