American Heart Association - Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) - Provider Course

MANDATORY PREREQUISITE PRIOR TO ATTENDING THIS CLASS: BASIC ARRHYTHMIA

The goals of the Pediatric Advanced Life Support Course are to provide the participant with:

  • The information needed to recognize infant and children at risk for cardiopulmonary arrest.
  • The information and strategies needed to prevent cardiopulmonary arrest in infants and children.
  • The cognitive and psychomotor skills needed to resuscitate and stabilize infants and children in respiratory failure, shock, or cardiopulmonary arrest.

Target Audience:

This course is intended for healthcare providers who are responsible for the well being of infants and children - nurses, paramedical personnel, respiratory therapists, pediatricians, emergency physicians, family physicians and others. Information to recognize infant & children at risk for cardiopulmonary arrest and info needed to prevent cardio arrest in infants & children.

Class time will be spent both lecture and rotating simulated skills stations. The skills stations are designed to provide participants the opportunity to master skills essential to the stabilization of seriously ill or injured newborns, infants, or children. Written examinations and skill demonstrations require competent completion in order to successfully complete course.

Community Participants pay $200.00 (includes the cost of materials)

NRHS staff pay for the PALS Provider manual and the pre-course self assessment only. Cost of the manual is $35 and may be purchased in the Education Center office.

The manual and the pre-assessment are your "Entrance Ticket" into class.

Additional Information

Certification: Successful completion of this program provides the learner with a Certificate of Completion and a wallet size certification card. The certification is granted for 2 years.

CEUs: Norman Regional Health System approves this program for 16 contact hours of continuing education credit. Norman Regional Health System is approved as a provider of continuing education in nursing by the Colorado Nurse’s Association, which is accredited as an approver of continuing education in nursing by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission of Accreditation.

Important: Prior to the course the participant must obtain and review the program book. (It is very difficult to pass the examination and skill stations without reading the book.) It is recommended that participants obtain a book at least 2 weeks prior to the scheduled course. A PALS textbook, $35/book, may be purchased in the Education Center & a limited number of books will be available for checkout in the library.

The book comes with a precourse checklist and pre-assessment test to be completed prior to coming to the Course. It is mandatory. The pre-assessment test is the participant's "Entrance Ticket" into the Course.

Prerequisites: Students must adequately prepare to successfully complete the PALS Provider Course. This course does not teach CPR skills, interpretation of rhythm strips, or basic PALS pharmacology. Before taking the course students must be proficient in the following:

  • Performing CPR skills using the 2010 AHA Guidelines for CPR and ECC.
  • Reading and interpreting basic ECG rhythm strips.
  • Knowledge of basic PALS Pharmacology
  • Evaluating a seriously ill or injured child using the systematic approach to pediatric assessment outlined in the PALS Provider Manual.

Participant cancellation must be received 24 hours prior to the program. Cancellations after this time or no-shows will be charged a $25 administrative fee.
