What is depression?

At one time or another, most of us feel “down in the dumps,” sad or “blue.” These feelings may reflect the “ups” and “downs” of life, and as such, are normal.

However, these feelings may be the symptoms of depression, and can become so severe that a person is unable to get through the day. If your work, home life and happiness are negatively affected by depressed mood, you may be suffering from a depressive disorder, a medical condition that often requires professional intervention.

Depression Questionnaire:

Answer yes if the symptom has been present for at least two weeks in the last six months.

  • Becoming easily tired
  • Sleeping too much
  • Low self esteem
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Problems making decisions
  • Hopelessness
  • Feeling “on edge”
  • Inability to fall or stay asleep

A score of three or more may be significant.

If your score on the test was three or above, you may be suffering from a depressive disorder. Remember, this test is not designed as a diagnostic or treatment tool. A score of three or above simply indicates a need for an evaluation by a qualified professional. There are a variety of effective medical and clinical treatment options for depression, and you may be appropriate for any one or a combination of several. You can take back control of your life.
