Quick Tips for Diabetes Management

Blood Glucose Monitoring

  • Test your blood glucose in the morning before breakfast and two hours after a meal
  • Alternate testing after a different meal each day
  • Record blood glucose levels in log book
  • Write down three days of meals
  • Keep your test meter clean and out of extreme temperature

Goals of Blood Glucose Control

  • Fasting - 100-110
  • 2 hours after meals - 140 or less
  • A1C - Less than 6.5%

Hypoglycemia (Low blood glucose)

The following symptoms may indicate hypoglycemia or low blood glucose:

  • Shakiness
  • Trembling
  • Nervousness
  • Cold
  • Fast heartbeat
  • Dizziness
  • Anxiousness
  • Headache
  • Sweating
  • Irritability

If you have one or more of these symptoms and your blood glucose is less than 70, consume 15g carbohydrate (1/2 cup orange juice, ½ cup regular soda, 1 cup skim milk) wait 15 to 20 minutes, and then re-check blood glucose. If it is not close to mealtime, have a snack.
