NORMAN - Norman Regional Health System is partnering with Life Line Screenings to offer a special stroke screening during National Stroke Awareness Month in May. Norman Regional’s Certified Stroke Center wants to raise awareness of how to prevent a stroke and how to recognize and respond to a stroke warning signs by acting FAST.

Anyone can have a stroke, it doesn't matter your age, race or gender. Every year about 785,000 people have a stroke and 130,000 die from a stroke. The good news is 80 percent of strokes can be prevented by managing controllable risk factors. It's important you talk to your personal doctor about your own risk factors. Some controllable risk factors include: high blood pressure, diabetes, tobacco use, obesity and high cholesterol. In addition, more women than men suffer from a stroke each year. Also, American Indians, African-Americans and Hispanics are at a higher risk than Caucasians.

If you think someone is having a stroke, it is crucial that you act fast. A clot buster medication can be given that may reduce long-term disability for the most common type of stroke. But, the medicine has to be administered within the first three hours of the first symptom. With urgent and immediate care from providers like Norman Regional, people can survive and go on to live happy, healthy lives. Act FAST and call 911 immediately at any sign of a stroke.

Use the acronym F.A.S.T to remember the warning signs:

  • Face: Ask the person to smile. Does one side of the face droop?
  • Arms: Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?
  • Speech: Ask the person to repeat a simple phrase. Is their speech slurred or strange?
  • Time: If you observe any of these signs, call 911 immediately.

If you or someone you know does experience a stroke, Norman Regional Health System's Stroke Center is here to provide you with immediate quality care. The Stroke Center recently earned the Gold Seal to Approval from The Joint Commission for the second year in a row.
