The CDC reports that influenza is widespread across the state. To protect our patients and healers, and to prevent the further spread of the flu, we ask that anyone with cold or flu-like symptoms refrain from visiting patients at Norman Regional Health System.
Flu-like symptoms include:
- Sore throat
- Extreme tiredness
- Body aches
- Runny or stuffy nose
- Vomiting or diarrhea
The symptoms can come on suddenly and last for days.
Adults and children with flu-like symptoms, but no other medical conditions should call their primary care provider before visiting an emergency room.
People with severe symptoms – such as an extremely high fever, difficulty breathing, confusion, consistent chest or abdominal pain, or have a high risk of serious flu complications should call 911 or visit an emergency room.
The best protection against the flu is the flu vaccine, which is still available. A flu vaccination is recommended for everyone six months and older, especially pregnant women, the elderly and anyone with a chronic health condition or weakened immune system.
Flu season typically runs through April, so it’s not too late to get protected. It’s the most effective way to prevent the flu and can also shorten the length and severity of the illness for those who become infected with the virus.
You can also help reduce the risk of infection by:
- Washing hands thoroughly for 20 seconds or using hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol
- Sanitizing and disinfecting frequently-touched surfaces on a regular basis
- Covering your mouth when you cough and your nose when you sneeze
- Staying home from work or school if you are sick
