Norman Regional Health System Receives National Award
NORMAN – Norman Regional Health System was awarded the Team Spirit of Excellence Award from Modern Healthcare. Out of 100 applicants, Norman Regional was chosen for their achievement of creating a “magnetic culture” to which employees would be attracted and retained.
“Our award winning team makes a difference each and every day they come to work through their care and compassion in caring for others, improving the health and wellness of our community and being involved through various civic organizations to support Norman, Moore, and surrounding areas. I am very proud of the Norman Regional team,” stated David Whitaker President and Chief Executive Officer of Norman Regional Health System
Since Norman Regional began the “magnetic culture” campaign in 2000, their net income has increased from 4.9 million to 23.8 million in 2007. The employee turnover has gone from 30% to 17% while employment advertising costs have fallen 50%. Employee satisfaction scores have been at the 90th percentile or above for five of the past six years.
Norman Regional implemented more than 3,000 employee suggestions since the “magnetic culture” campaign began. Carolyn Shockey, Director of Human Resources at Norman Regional, and others communicated back to employees what they had implemented and who prompted them.
“We tell them we made changes because they suggested it. It doesn’t just fall out of the sky,” said Shockey. “They see validity to taking the survey and making the comments. The biggest challenge we have, right now, is one of sustaining. We can never sit back and say we’re done.”
“What impressed me was the fact that they surveyed their employees for suggestions and feedback,” said team category judge Pam CapoBianco, Chief Operating Officer at Inova Fair Oaks, Fairfax, Va.
