Volunteers Honored During National Health Care Volunteer Week

NORMAN - From delivering flowers to patients to providing funds for CPR education, Norman Regional’s volunteers are vital members of the health system.

During National Health Care Volunteer’s Week, which runs April 19 to April 25, Norman Regional Health System is thanking the 400 men, women and teens who serve their community by volunteering at the health system.

In 2009, volunteers spent more than 56,802 hours delivering flowers, escorting families, working at the gift shop and providing extra customer service to Norman Regional’s patients, families and visitors. Because of the volunteer’s spirit of giving, the Health System saved more than $840,000.

“Norman Regional is grateful to have a team of wonderful, caring individuals who donate their time to the health system,” said Wendy Fiebrich, manager of Volunteer Services. “Our patients, visitors and staff appreciate these dedicated individuals and the difference they make in their community.”

Not only does the Norman Regional Volunteer Auxiliary donate their time, members also donate money to fund departmental needs. Each year, the Auxiliary provides needed funds for items such as testing materials for speech therapy patients, software for pharmacists to use on their PDA’s to show drug interactions, CPR supplies for staff education, automated external defibrillators, and much more.

The Auxiliary also supports the Hospitality House, which provides accommodations for Norman Regional patients and their families who live outside of the Norman area.

The Health System will thank volunteers by holding annual volunteer appreciation luncheons. Norman Regional Hospital will celebrate on Tuesday, April 27 with guest speaker Sherri Coale, coach of the University of Oklahoma’s women’s basketball team. Moore Medical Center will hold their luncheon on Thursday, April 29.
