HealthPlex Hospital Celebrates First Year

It’s been one year since the HealthPlex opened its doors to patients and in that year the hospital has experienced increased growth and added new services to the area.

The hospital is developing centers of excellence in the Orthopedic & Spine Center, Heart & Vascular Institute and Women’s and Children’s Pavilion. The HealthPlex’s Total Joint Replacement Program was also certified in disease specific care by the Joint Commission, making it the first and currently the only in the state to hold that honor.

“The location of that HealthPlex has provided the Health System with additional access to Interstate 35 to help us grow and serve our regional communities,” said Daryle Voss, Chief Administrative Officer at the HealthPlex. “We now have a footprint for future growth.”

That growth is evident in the numbers of patients seen at the HealthPlex. Voss reported that the Chest Pain Center was averaging 15 patients a day in November 2009. Now that number has tripled to almost 42 patients a day. Orthopedic surgical volumes were also up 12 percent during financial year 2010 compared to financial year 2009. A fifth operating room in the main surgery area will also open in late October to meet demand, Voss said.

From October 2009 through August 2010 (the most recent figures) the HealthPlex had seen:

  • 8,305 Chest Pain Center visits
  • 2,037 In-patient surgeries
  • 1,740 Out-patient surgeries
  • 4,639 Discharges
  • 26,864 Out-patient registrations
  • 174,215 Lab tests
  • 1,829 Deliveries

In addition to seeing more patients, the HealthPlex is also offering more options to those patients. A robotic surgery device – called the da Vinci Surgical System – was added to the HealthPlex in January 2010, bringing a new service to Norman. This device offers a new option for minimally invasive surgeries. Drs. Porter and Treacy (ob/gyns) are fully credentialed to use the new tool, while Drs. Parker, Mulligan, Lashbrook, Bethel and Anderson will be finishing up their training and the privileging process in the next few weeks

The area around the HealthPlex, dubbed Medical Park West, continues to grow as well. Recent additions to the area include a CVS, Sonic and Supercuts. A McDonald’s is currently under construction.

Voss extended a thank you to all the employees, physicians and donors who helped make the HealthPlex’s first year a successful one.

A special one year birthday celebration is planned at the HealthPlex with three days of special events, presentations and a birthday bash. Please check or sign up to our eNewsletter for more details.
