Diabetes Center Celebrates 10 Year Anniversary

This August, Norman Regional’s Diabetes Education Center will celebrate ten years of serving the community through diabetes education and management.

“The educators at the diabetes center are thrilled to be celebrating this achievement,” said Teresa Brown, a certified diabetes educator (CDE) and supervisor of the Diabetes Center. “We would like to extend our sincere thanks and appreciation to all the community members and healthcare providers that have supported us and utilized our services over the last 10 years.”

In those ten years, the center has seen the number of people diagnosed with diabetes increase but also has seen advancements in both the technology and treatments used to combat this disease, Brown said. The diabetes rate in Oklahoma has more than tripled in the past 15 years, she said.

“The rise in diabetes seems to correspond with the rise in obesity rates,” Brown said. “And over the past ten years the patients we see with Type 2 Diabetes are also getting younger.”

As their patients have evolved, so has the Diabetes Education Center. The center has become more patient-focused, concentrating on an individual’s needs and goals.

“For example, when our classes started much of the information was provided in a lecture format and now our classes are much more conversational and discussion based,” Brown said. “Our goal at the Diabetes Center is to take information that many individuals know and make it more applicable to their particular situation.”

Technology has progressed as well including glucose monitors that require smaller blood samples. Patients also now have the option to wear continuous glucose monitors that can provide more insight into trends in blood sugar changes. Smart phones have brought about change in diabetes treatment as well with patients utilizing apps to keep track of the food they eat or find nutritional information.

The Diabetes Education Center also recently partnered with the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to bring a national pre-diabetes education program to the Norman area. Knowledge is power, Brown said, and the education the center provides helps patients manage their diabetes.

“By knowing how to take care of your health and diabetes, a patient can decrease their risk for complications associated with diabetes and live a long and healthy life,” Brown said. “At our center we track our patients a1c reports which is a marker of diabetes control. These lab values consistently show improvement after diabetes education and this trend is consistent with other medical studies.”

The Diabetes Education Center provides:

  • Type 1 and Type 2 individual and group education
  • Insulin pump training
  • A gestational diabetes program
  • Pre-diabetes education
  • Monthly support groups

It is also recognized as a Center of Excellence by the American Diabetes Association. The center has several fun giveaways planned, so like Norman Regional Health System on Facebook for giveaway information during August 7-21.
