4 Steps to Choosing a Pediatrician

So it’s time to find a pediatrician or a family medicine physician who sees pediatric patients. Maybe you’re about to become a parent, or maybe you’ve moved to a new city. You’ve got to find someone you feel comfortable talking to, someone your kids will love. What should you be looking for?

  1. Location. Should you look for a pediatrician or family medicine who sees pediatric patients closer to home, to your work or to their school? Which will be most convenient for you?

  2. Insurance Network. Check with your insurance provider to make sure this provider is in the network – it will be less expensive than visiting an out-of-network doctor.

  3. Access to a Health System. If your child ever needs a specialist or a hospital procedure, it’s often easier to get a referral when the doctor is connected with a comprehensive health system.

  4. Personality. Of course, you’ll want a doctor your kids like! Look up your potential doctor on review sites like HealthGrades, RateMDs or Vitals. It’s also OK to make appointments with a few different doctors to find one you like.

Now that you know what to look for, where should you start? Try our handy Find a Doctor tool to find local pediatricians or family medicine physicians who see pediatric patients who are part of the Norman Regional Health System:
