Smart Pump Technology

Norman Regional Hospital (NRH) is one of the first hospitals in the state to offer patients “smart pump” technology as a means of stopping medical errors associated with IV infusions. NRH recently implemented 330 Hospira A+ Infusion Devices with Hospira Mednet Safety Software. The addition of the Mednet Safety Software offers significant advantages over older standard infusion pump technology. “We are constantly striving to improve the safety of our patients and are proud to offer this type of technology to patients of Norman Regional Hospital,” states Jamie Blades, Nurse Manager and Team Leader for this project.

Nationally, groups are working to increase patient safety through mutually agreed upon goals. Improving medication errors is one of these goals. One of most common types of medical errors reported across the nation is the incorrect programming of IV infusion pumps. When this error occurs with certain medications it can result in serious adverse drug events since there is little ability to identify and correct the error before it reaches the patient. This new smart IV pump technology addresses this ongoing national safety issue for all hospitals and clinics. Smart pumps offer the capability for a hospital to pre-program its standard concentrations and to program upper and lower dose limits. Smart pumps alert the nurse if the pump has been programmed outside of hospital established safe limits and will prevent administration of doses that are considered by the hospital to be extremely unsafe. These pumps provide an added layer of protection for the patient and caregiver.

According to Darin Smith, Pharm.D, Clinical Manager of Pharmacy Services, “Infusion pump devices are used on almost every patient admitted to our facility. We were always careful at Norman Regional with administration of medication so we’re very excited to add another layer of safety through these new IV pumps. This change increases the safety of a large number of people in our community.” The hospital pharmacy in cooperation with nursing services helped build the drug library and establish hospital specific parameters used within the safety software.

According to the Institute of Medicine, as many as 98,000 Americans die each year due to a variety of medical errors. Norman Regional Health System is committed to patient safety and offering quality care.
