Spring of 2023, Norman Regional Health System gained 10 new residents. Seven of those matches are College of Medicine or College of Osteopathic Medicine graduates. Three of those matches are College of Pharmacy graduates.
What is a residency?
A residency in the healthcare field begins after students have completed their schooling. In this case, these doctors and pharmacists have gone to medical or pharmacy school and have graduated from their universities.
Medical school to earn an MD or a DO is four years in length, and pharmacy school to earn a Pharm D is also four years in length. These students have earned their degrees, and are seeking hands-on experience under the supervision of qualified healthcare providers.
Pharmacy residents will take their certification early on in residency and be practicing as licensed pharmacists for the majority of their residency which lasts one year. Emergency medicine residents will train to gain many certifications and practice under their own licenses.
Emergency medicine residents must complete their residency under attending physicians or supervisors, which lasts four years, to then obtain their license and begin practicing or to further their specialty through fellowship.
What is matching?
Students in medical and pharmacy school go through a process of researching programs of residency, applying to those programs and interviewing with the programs for which they apply. Once students interview with the programs, the students rank the residency programs and the programs rank all the students they would be willing to have for residency.
An algorithm then pairs students with programs, which then solidifies a student’s “match.” The student’s match is where they will carry out their residency after completing schooling.
