Hip Fracture

Injuries from falling, especially hip fractures, cause millions of adults to be hospitalized. One out of three adults aged 65 and older will fall each year, but less than half will talk to their healthcare provider about it. Don’t wait to seek care if you injure yourself by falling.

Most of our hip fracture patients are treated in our Orthopedics and Spine Center at the Norman Regional HealthPlex, off Interstate 35 and Tecumseh Road. Our team includes physicians, nurses, therapists and more.

Excellence in Hip Fracture Care

Norman Regional is dedicated to caring for those with hip fractures. In fact, our program received Disease Specific Certification from The Joint Commission. This means our program and its team work continuously to provide safe, high-quality care, treatment and services.

Risk Factors for Hip Fractures

Could you be at risk for a hip fracture?

  • Women sustain three-quarters of all hip fractures.
  • White women are more likely to sustain hip fractures.
  • In both men and women, hip fracture rates increase with age.
  • Osteoporosis, a disease that makes bones porous, increase a person’s risk of sustaining a hip fracture.

Preventing Falls

There are four things you can do to prevent falls at home.

  • Begin a regular exercise routine. (Please speak with your physician first before beginning an exercise program.)
  • Ask your healthcare provider to review your medicines. Some medicine may make you dizzy.
  • Have your vision checked.
  • Make your home safer. Remove things you could trip over like small rugs. Install grab bars near the toilet, shower and bathtub. Also wear shoes inside and outside the house.

Norman Regional has a comprehensive Fall Prevention program for patients who are at risk for falls while they are inside our hospitals. If you are hospitalized, ask your nurse about how you can help prevent falls.
