(Back row left to right) Tommy Leopard, Neal Keith, Julie Evan Pitts, Jeff Farley, and Mike Moody (Front row left to right) Robert Feezer, Nikki McCarthy, and Patti Guthrie were honored at the 2011 Medical Staff Holiday Party.
Norman Regional Health System nurses were honored during the medical staff holiday party. For the first time, physicians nominated and voted on the awards given to the eight nurses selected as finalists. Those chosen received cash prizes between $250 and $2,500. The physicians donated the money for the awards to a special fund created in partnership with the Norman Regional Health Foundation. Any employee or physician can donate to this designated Nurse of the Year Award fund.
The nursing awards were the idea of the newly developed physician focus group. The awards organizer was Dr. Lana Nelson. She said the NRHS physicians wanted to do something to let the nursing staff know the doctors appreciate all our nurses do.
First place prize went to Julie Evan Pitts from the Oncology Unit at Norman Regional Hospital. She has been with the health system for 12 years. “As a nurse, we don’t get a lot of praise. So to think that the physicians think that much of me means a ton. It also means I’ll have to work twice as hard next year,” is what Julie said when asked about winning the prize.
Second place was awarded to registered nurse Nikki McCarthy of Women’s and Children’s at the HealthPlex. McCarthy has been with the health system for 14 years. “I feel very honored and humbled. This award was so unexpected. I want to thank the physicians for thinking of me in this way, I’m honored.”
Third place honor went to Tommy Leopard from the Porter campus Emergency Department. “It’s pretty humbling to think people have such a high opinion of you. I feel like I’m just an average nurse, I could think of many others that deserve it more than me,” Tommy said when asked about his win.
