The Vizient/American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) Accredited Nurse Residency Program™ (NRP) at Norman Regional Health System is specifically designed to help you transition from a newly licensed nurse, to a skilled, confident and accomplished nurse in your field.

About Norman Regional Nur​se Residency

The Norman Regional Vizient/AACN NRP is a structured program that provides new graduate registered nurses (RNs) the opportunity to gain the necessary knowledge and skills to deliver safe, high-quality care within a particular clinical environment. This program ensures that new graduate RNs have the support necessary to make the transition from school to career a positive and successful experience.

The Norman Regional Vizient/AACN NRP is grounded in evidence-based practices (EBPs) and built on a curriculum developed by subject matter experts nationwide. This program focuses on helping you build a strong foundation for EBP to inform your clinical decision-making and improve our patient outcomes.

Program Details

Our residency program offers new graduate RNs a supportive setting throughout the first year of practice. The comprehensive framework for the program curriculum is built upon the AACN’s Ten Domains of Nursing Practice, empowering newly licensed nurses to transition seamlessly into their first professional role.

The program provides new graduate RNs with the orientation, practical experience, support, resources and mentorship needed for success.

In the Norman Regional Vizient/AACN Nurse Residency Program™, Nurse Residents will:
  • Go through an organizational orientation and a structured unit orientation with a dedicated preceptor
  • Receive mentor and peer support during the first year
  • Attend monthly seminars with a comprehensive transition-to-nursing practice curriculum designed to make the transition from advanced beginner to competent RN
  • Enhance clinical judgment and patient safety
  • Reinforce dedication to the profession and organization
  • Lay the foundation for utilizing EBP to inform decision making
  • Participate in activities aimed at fostering professional growth and facilitating the transition during the first year of practice
  • Gain practical experience
The comprehensive transition-to-practice curriculum is designed to help new graduate RNs:
  • Manage stress
  • Enhance decision-making skills
  • Improve critical-thinking skills
  • Facilitate patient safety
The goals of our Vizient/AACN Nurse Residency Program™ are to:
  • Progress new graduate RNs from being advanced beginners to becoming skilled professionals
  • Reduce new graduate RN turnover in the first year of practice
  • Enhance participation in professional activities
  • Strengthen the new graduate RN commitment to the profession
  • Establish tools for implementing wellness strategies to cope with reality shock
Norman Regional Vizient/AACN NRP participants must commit to:
  • One-year involvement with the program
  • Attending mandatory four-hour monthly seminars
  • Participating in a group project of evidence-based practice to influence patient care on the assigned unit
  • Receiving mentorship provided throughout the transition to practice period
  • Taking part in activities aimed at both fostering professional growth and facilitating the first year of nursing practice
