This recognition shows that Norman Regional is dedicated to providing excellent healthcare that takes into consideration women's specific needs and preferences. So what does this award mean for not just Norman Regional, but also our patients and the community we serve?

Bariatrics

The Women’s Choice Award signifies that Norman Regional is in the top seven percent of 4,728 U.S. hospitals reviewed for bariatrics.

“There are many women who struggle with their weight, especially as they get older.  For some, diet and exercise alone aren’t enough and they need to turn to bariatric surgery to reduce their weight for their overall health.” said Delia Passi, Founder and CEO of the Women’s Choice Award. “As a family’s chief caregiver, it is important for women to keep their own health in top shape and we help her by letting her know where to go for the best bariatric surgery.”

An American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery study found that the risk of death from any cause is considerably less for bariatric patients than for individuals affected by severe obesity who have never had the surgery. The data shows that cancer mortality is reduced by 60 percent for bariatric surgery patients and death as a result of diabetes and heart disease is reduced by more than 92 percent and 40 percent, respectively.

Norman Regional’s bariatric program is also designated as a Center of Excellence by the American Society for Metabolic and bariatric surgery.

Heart Care

The Women’s Choice Award signifies that Norman Regional is in the top ten percent of 4,728 U.S. hospitals offering heart care services.

According to the American Heart Association, heart disease is the No. 1 killer of American women, causing 1 in 3 deaths each year—approximately one woman every minute.  What’s often thought of as a “man’s disease” strikes more women than men, and is more deadly than all forms of cancer combined.

“Heart disease is the leading killer of women,” said Delia Passi, founder and CEO of the Women’s Choice Award.  “With such strong prevalence of heart disease in women, we want every woman to know where to find the very best heart care before she ever has an incident.”

Norman Regional is a heart care Center of Excellence accredited by the American College of Cardiology.

Obstetrics

The award signifies that Norman Regional is in the top 13 percent of 4,728 U.S. hospitals offering obstetrics.

“Having a baby is one of the most precious times in a woman’s life,” said Delia Passi founder and CEO of the Women’s Choice Award.  “New moms have many choices to make when it comes to having their baby, and choosing where to deliver the baby is right up there with choosing the best doctor. We’ve made it easy for her to identify the best hospitals that are proven to deliver an outstanding experience.”

This recognition further demonstrates Norman Regional’s commitment to quality care for mothers and their children after earning the first-in-the-nation OBED Accreditation.

Orthopedics

The Women’s Choice Award signifies that Norman Regional is in the top five percent of 4,728 U.S. hospitals offering orthopedics services.

“Women have different orthopedic needs, particularly as they grow older and become more at risk for osteoporosis, arthritis and fractures.  They are also staying active much longer,” said Delia Passi, founder and CEO of the Women’s Choice Award. “Being treated with the proper level of care impacts one’s health, well-being, and healing, so it is critical for women to know those hospitals that have demonstrated the highest level of quality care for their patient’s bone health, with a special focus on the needs and preferences of women. We are the only award that recognizes a hospital’s ability to meet women’s distinctive needs.”

Norman Regional is also accredited as a Center of Excellence by the Joint Commission for hip fracture care and joint replacement.

Stroke Care

The Women’s Choice Award signifies that Norman Regional is in the top nine percent of 4,728 U.S. hospitals offering stroke care services.

According to the American Stroke Association, one in five women in the United States will have a stroke in her lifetime. Nearly 60% of stroke deaths, a “brain attack,” are in women, and studies show that women are more likely to be misdiagnosed for stroke even with the same symptoms present as men.

“Timely diagnosis and effective care are critical to preventing disability and improving chances of recovery from stroke. The time to identify your community’s leading hospital for stroke care is right now, not in the middle of a medical emergency when every minute is precious,” said Delia Passi, founder and CEO of the Women’s Choice Award. “We congratulate these hospitals and their dedication to education, prevention, and early intervention to reduce the devastating effects of stroke.”

Hospitals that meet the stroke center certification requirement, must then meet or exceed the following performance measures from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS): Hospitals must also score in the top 80% of all hospitals in the percent of patients receiving Head CT scan results within 45 minutes, and cannot have received a rating of Worse than the National Rate for the Deaths from Serious Treatable Complications measure.

In addition to being a Women’s Choice Award Best hospital for Stroke Care, Norman Regional also just earned received recertification as a Stroke Center of Excellence by the Joint Commission.
