Pharmacy Residency

Norman Regional Pharmacy Residency program is open to three PGY-1 residents, allowing for significant camaraderie with your co-residents, while also providing plenty of one-on-one preceptor interaction. You will train and be mentored under the guidance of passionate and experienced board-certified preceptors who are progressive and committed to improving patient care. Our program has been ASHP accredited since 2001, with 54 successful graduates as of June 2025.

Pharmacy Residency Mission Statement

As a proactive and progressive department, the Department of Pharmacy Services will seek to optimize pharmacy care* in all settings through collaboration with the patient, physician and other health care providers.

*Pharmacy care is defined as the direct, responsible provision of medication-related care for the purpose of achieving definite outcomes that improve the patient’s quality of life.

Residency Goals

  • Develop clinical, practical, and administrative skills in a unique variety of settings in a community health system.
  • Learn to work independently and as a part of an interdisciplinary team to promote optimal drug therapy and responsible drug therapy outcomes.
  • Contribute to the knowledge of the field through teaching and seeking publication.
  • Develop and complete a major research project.

Residency Requirements

Doctor of Pharmacy from an accredited college of pharmacy, eligibility for licensure in the state of Oklahoma,
letter of intent, curriculum vitae, academic transcript, three letters of recommendation, and an interview.

Teaching

Teaching activities include precepting APPE student clinical rotations, professional inservices, didactic lectures for emergency medicine medical residents and optional ASHP teaching certificate. Residents will be required to present posters at the ASHP Mid-Year Clinical Meeting and provide a podium presentation at a regional residency conference.

Staffing

Starting the first weekend after Labor Day, each resident will staff three days every three weeks.

About the Pharmacy

The Norman Regional Health System Pharmacy Department is a highly eclectic group, employing 48 registered pharmacists (including three pharmacy residents), 33 technicians, and a department assistant. Of the pharmacists, 16 have completed a pharmacy practice residency, three have completed a specialty residency, and 14 are Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialists.

You will find our pharmacists, in conjunction with technicians, profiling orders, answering drug information questions, compounding and dispensing medications, filling employee/indigent prescriptions, providing support in the surgery satellite pharmacies, precepting students, and performing direct patient care activities such as pharmacokinetic monitoring, renal dosing of medications, and nutrition management.

The pharmacy is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and there is also a Clinical Pharmacist on-call at all times. Pharmacists perform multiple other clinical activities including anticoagulation monitoring for all hospitalized patients, influenza vaccination screening/ordering, IV to PO medication conversion, and antimicrobial stewardship program activities. Pharmacists are also active members of various hospital committees in addition to managing many other responsibilities throughout the health system.

The pharmacy department consists of a centralized distribution pharmacy, inpatient floor based clinical pharmacy specialists and surgery pharmacy satellites. Some of the clinical services and precepting opportunities we provide include:
