Every woman is at risk for breast cancer. Mammograms are the single most effective method of early detection and identifying cancer in its most treatable stages. For women 40 and older, mammograms should be part of a yearly physical routine. Monthly breast self-examinations are also important for good breast health.

The American Medical Association, American College of Radiology and the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation recommend the following guidelines:

  • Annual screening mammography for women beginning at age 40
  • If you are under age 40 and have a family history of breast cancer or other concerns about your risk, talk with your doctor about when to begin mammography
  • Have a clinical breast examination by your doctor at least every three years beginning at age 20 and every year after 40
  • Beginning at age 20, perform monthly breast self-examinations
  • Become familiar with the normal look and feel of your breasts – if ANY change occurs, report it to your doctor.
  • 3D mammography lets doctors better evaluate breast images, layer by layer, for greater accuracy. Greater accuracy means both better breast cancer detection and less of a chance a patient will need additional imaging/testing. 3D mammography is performed similar to traditional mammography.

Nipple Sparing Mastectomy

Nipple Sparing Mastectomy represents a significant surgical advancement for women facing breast removal due to breast cancer or as a preventive measure for risk reduction surgery. This innovative procedure involves the meticulous removal of all breast glandular tissue from beneath the skin and nipple through a small incision.

It's important to note that the successful execution of nipple-sparing mastectomy relies on the expertise of highly trained and experienced breast surgical oncologists. These specialists consistently achieve high overall success rates with this procedure. While nipple-sparing mastectomy may not be suitable for all patients, it does present a valuable option for those who qualify.

Understanding Breast Cancer Risk Factors and Genetic Counseling

In the context of disease, a risk factor is any element that heightens the likelihood of its occurrence, including conditions like breast cancer. Jenience_Miller.jpg (109 KB)

It's important to note, however, that having one or multiple risk factors doesn't guarantee that you'll develop the disease.

Some breast cancer risk factors are beyond your control, such as the natural aging process or inheriting specific genetic alterations, which can elevate your breast cancer risk.

Jeneice Miller, APRN-CNP, AGN-BC, a Certified Genetics Nurse, specializes in managing high-risk patients. She offers expert genetic counseling and testing services, following the latest guidelines from national oncology societies.

Male Breast Cancer in Oklahoma

While male breast cancer is less common than its female counterpart, it carries an excellent prognosis when detected in its early stages. One key factor contributing to delayed diagnoses is a lack of awareness. Unlike many women who are familiar with recognizing potential signs of breast cancer, men often have less awareness, making them less likely to seek early medical assistance.

Potential symptoms of male breast cancer to be aware of include:

  • A painless lump in one breast
  • Nipple retraction, ulceration or discharge
  • Skin changes on the breast, such as puckering or dimpling
  • Redness or scaling of the skin on the breast or nipple

If you observe any of these symptoms, it's crucial to consult your doctor promptly. It's worth noting that we have successfully treated numerous male breast cancer patients and early detection can make a significant difference in outcomes.

The Breast Surgery Clinic is conveniently located on the first floor inside the Women’s Healthcare Plaza. This building has close parking.
