Blood Donors Still Needed as Supply Recovers from Winter Shortages

Even though the winter storms are behind us, the impact on our region’s blood supply is not.
According to Our Blood Institute, recent severe winter weather led to widespread blood drive cancellations and donor shortages across Oklahoma and surrounding states. In their recent update, OBI shared that thousands of donations were missed during the “Arctic Blast Blood Emergency,” putting significant strain on the regional blood supply. While operations have resumed, inventory levels are still recovering — and patients in our hospitals continue to depend on life-saving transfusions every single day.
Blood cannot be manufactured. It can’t be stockpiled long term. It must come from volunteer donors.
It’s Game Time — Join the Team

February blood drives at Norman Regional are this week, and OBI is inviting our community to “take the court” and help save lives. All successful donors will receive a limited-edition Donor Champions basketball-themed t-shirt as a thank-you for stepping up when it matters most.
Whether you’re a die-hard basketball fan or simply believe in showing up for your community, there is no offseason when it comes to the need for blood donations.

Why Your Donation Matters
Even after winter weather passes, the effects linger. Trauma patients, cancer patients, surgical patients, and individuals with chronic conditions rely on a steady blood supply. Just one donation can help save multiple lives.
If you’ve ever considered giving blood, now is the time. The supply is still rebuilding — and your donation could make the difference for someone in our community.
