Why a Colonoscopy Matters

Colorectal cancer is the fourth most common cancer in the United States and the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths. However, it is also one of the most preventable and treatable cancers when detected early through routine screenings like colonoscopies.

Recent data highlights a concerning rise in colorectal cancer among younger adults, with 20% of cases occurring in individuals under 55. Not only is that nearly double the rate of what was observed in 1995, the rates of younger individuals with colorectal cancer are still rising. In light of these trends, the recommended age for a colonoscopy has been lowered in recent years from 50 to 45. When family history is present, the recommended age is even lower. For those with a family history of colorectal cancer, we recommend having a discussion with your physician.

When to Get a Colonoscopy

  • Routine screening starts at age 45 for individuals at average risk.
  • Those with a family history of colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease or other risk factors may need to begin screening earlier.
  • Follow-up screenings depend on prior colonoscopy findings, personal risk factors and your physician’s recommendations.

How to Prepare for a Colonoscopy

Proper preparation is essential for a successful colonoscopy, as it ensures a clear view of the colon for accurate diagnosis. Preparation includes:

  1. Dietary Restrictions – A few days before the procedure, you may be advised to avoid high-fiber foods and switch to a low-residue diet.
  2. Liquid Diet – The day before your colonoscopy, you will be required to consume only clear liquids such as broth, clear juices and sports drinks.
  3. Bowel Preparation (Laxative Solution) – You will need to drink a prescribed laxative solution to completely empty your bowels before the procedure.
  4. Medication Adjustments – Some medications, including blood thinners or GLP-1 medications including Ozempic, Wegovy, etc…, may need to be adjusted—talk to your doctor.

What to Expect During a Colonoscopy

A colonoscopy is a minimally invasive procedure that allows our gastroenterologists to examine the colon using a thin, flexible tube with a camera at the end. The procedure typically follows these steps:

  • You will receive a sedative to ensure comfort.
  • The doctor will insert the scope into your rectum to examine the colon lining for polyps, inflammation or signs of cancer.
  • If any abnormal tissue or polyps are found, they may be removed or biopsied during the procedure.
  • The procedure usually lasts 30 to 60 minutes.

Recovery After a Colonoscopy

Most patients recover quickly from a colonoscopy. After the procedure:

  • You will rest in a recovery area until the sedation wears off.
  • You may experience mild bloating or cramping, which typically subsides within a few hours.
  • It is recommended to have someone drive you home, as the sedative may impair your ability to operate a vehicle.
  • You can resume your normal diet unless instructed otherwise by your doctor.

Colonoscopies Save Lives – Don’t Delay Your Screening

Regular colorectal cancer screenings significantly reduce cancer mortality rates by detecting precancerous growths before they become life-threatening. With increasing colorectal cancer cases, especially among young adults, screening awareness and early action are more important than ever.

At GI of Norman, our expert gastroenterologists use advanced imaging technology to provide safe and accurate screenings. Whether you are due for a routine colonoscopy or have concerns about digestive health, we are here to guide you every step of the way.
