College Volunteers

Enrich your college experience through volunteering

​At Norman Regional, we offer several volunteer opportunities for college students in a variety of departments.

You have the chance to volunteer in both medical and non-medical areas assisting Healers, stocking supplies, working in our gym nursery, rounding on patient floors, answering phones, providing wayfinding to hospital visitors, working in our retail areas and more.

Service Areas

Areas where our college volunteers work include:

• Emergency Department
  • Volunteers assist with families of patients by providing pillows, blankets, water and other comfort items. They also maintain an adequate number of wheelchairs in the ED, restock rooms, and assist with errands and other tasks.
• The Health Club
  • Volunteers can choose between the front desk and the nursery area. Volunteers at the front desk assist members with checking in and perform sales of merchandise, clerical duties, and other tasks. Volunteers in the nursery area check children in and out, tend to the children in the nursery, maintain a clean and safe environment, and perform other tasks.
• NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit)
  • Volunteers assist with granting visitors access to the unit, stock bedside carts, answer the phone and perform other tasks.
• Patient Rounding
  • Volunteers visit patients, offering complimentary comfort items such as lip balm, hair combs, puzzle books and more.
• PACU (Post Anesthesia Care Unit)
  • Volunteers restock supplies, escort families to the waiting area, print EKG strips and assist with other tasks.
• Same Day Surgery
  • Volunteers escort patients and families to rooms, assist families in the waiting area, take specimens to the lab, make charts and help with other duties.
• Women's and Children's Unit
  • Volunteers assist with granting visitor access to the unit, respond to patient calls, assemble charts and perform other tasks.
• Wound Care
  • Volunteers prepare daily patient charts, call patients to confirm appointments, assist with inventory and accompany nursing staff in patient appointments, learning about wound dressings and the hyperbaric wound care chambers.

College Volunteer Application, Selection and Onboarding

How to Apply

Participants are selected through an application process.

Applications will be reviewed in the order they are received.

The Interview Process

Upon completion of an application, potential volunteers will be interviewed. A limited number of applicants will be selected to participate in the program.

Onboarding for College Volunteers

Once selected, new college volunteers will be required to complete the following:

• Orientation
  • Each college volunteer is required to complete an online orientation and an in-person onboarding session. Orientation and onboarding are held three times a year, at the beginning of each semester (January, May and August). Timeframes for each orientation may vary.
• Health Screening
  • A lab draw to test for tuberculosis will be completed in the hospital's laboratory at no cost to you. Volunteers are required to submit proof of vaccination for measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella. If vaccination records are incomplete, a titer test will be drawn in the same lab draw as the tuberculosis screening.
• Background Check
  • A background check will be done on all college volunteers prior to receiving volunteer placement.
• Uniforms
  • Uniforms are mandatory for all volunteers. They include a navy blue uniform top; white, black or khaki slacks; and clean athletic shoes. The cost of the uniform top is $10.

Time Commitment

We ask our college volunteers to commit to a minimum of one shift per week for two semesters. Volunteers have the opportunity to change their service area day and time for each semester as they continue in the program.
