Department of Pharmacy Services
Mission Statement: As a proactive and progressive department, the Department of Pharmacy Services will seek to optimize pharmacy care* in all settings through collaboration with the patient, physician, and other health care providers.
*Pharmacy care is defined as the direct, responsible provision of medication related care for the purpose of achieving definite outcomes that improve a patient’s quality of life.
The Norman Regional Health System Pharmacy Department is a highly eclectic group, employing 42 registered pharmacists (including 3 pharmacy residents), 32 technicians, and a department assistant. Of the pharmacists, 13 have completed a pharmacy practice residency, 3 have completed a specialty residency, and 10 are Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialists. Currently there is no Board of Pharmacy requirement for technicians to be certified; however, a goal of the NRHS Department of Pharmacy is to eventually have all technicians nationally certified. Currently 9 out of 32 technicians are certified through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board. In addition, 3 technicians and 1 pharmacist have chemotherapy certifications.
You will find our pharmacists, in conjunction with technicians, profiling orders, answering drug information questions, compounding and dispensing medications, filling employee/indigent prescriptions, providing support in the surgery satellite pharmacy, precepting students, and performing direct patient care activities such as pharmacokinetic monitoring, renal dosing of medications, and nutrition management. The pharmacy is staffed 24 hours, 7 days a week, and there is also a Clinical Pharmacist on call at all times. Pharmacists perform multiple other clinical activities including anticoagulation monitoring for all hospitalized patients, influenza vaccination screening/ordering, IV to PO medication conversion, and antimicrobial stewardship program activities. Pharmacists are also active members of various hospital committees in addition to managing many other responsibilities throughout the health system.
